1987 – zahlreiche Vietnames*innen kommen als Vertragsarbeiter*innen nach Deutschland, um sich ein neues Leben aufzubauen. Eine davon ist Nguyen Thi Le. Zu ihrem 60. Geburtstag erinnert sie sich nun nochmal an ihre Anfänge in Deutschland zurück, die von Einsamkeit, Heimweh, aber auch Hoffnung geprägt sind.

Năm 1987 – nhiều người Việt Nam đến Đức theo diện lao động hợp đồng, với hy vọng xây dựng một cuộc sống mới. Một trong số đó là bà Nguyễn Thị Lệ. Nhân dịp sinh nhật lần thứ 60 của mình, bà nhớ lại những ngày đầu tiên ở Đức, khoảng thời gian được đánh dấu bởi nỗi cô đơn, nỗi nhớ quê hương, nhưng cũng tràn đầy hy vọng.

In Huy's family, many things remain unspoken. Why has there been so little discussion about how his parents' migration story shaped the different generations? Why is the relationship between parents and children so complicated? Is there even a shared narrative? And where is one's own identity rooted? To find answers to these questions, Huy turns to his grandparents in Vietnam. There, he documents their daily routines, meals, and conversations. By building a close bond with them, he also seeks to bridge the gap and grow closer to his own parents.
